Cape2Rio

The iconic Cape2Rio yacht race will depart Cape Town on a 3,300-nautical mile journey to Rio de Janeiro.

First held in 1971, Cape2Rio attracts world-class sailors and adventurers from across the globe with this year’s race featuring a strong mix of South African and international crews, showcasing Cape Town as a global hub for ocean racing.

A highlight for 2025 will be the Alexforbes Angel Wings, a youth development crew from the RCYC Sailing Academy, taking on the transatlantic challenge. Their journey represents resilience, opportunity and the next generation of South African sailors.

The race also partners with The International SeaKeepers Society, adding a marine science and ocean awareness dimension.

All participating yachts will be equipped with scientific devices that map the ocean floor, contributing valuable data to international marine research. This initiative demonstrates how sport can drive global environmental responsibility.

Spectators will be able to watch the start in Table Bay from various vantage points around the city, including Blouberg Beach, Granger Bay and even Lions Head.
