KHAYELITSHA FASHION WEEK: FROM TRASH TO TREND
Cape Town brace yourself. The runway is about to get a serious eco-friendly upgrade.
The iconic Artscape Theatre Centre will host the highly anticipated 11th anniversary of Khayelitsha Fashion Week (KFW) on 18 July 2026. Marking over a decade of growth, innovation, and community impact, this year’s show promises to be an unforgettable fusion of high fashion and environmental consciousness.
The event is brought to you by the Khayelitsha Fashion Hub, in partnership with the City of Cape Town as part of its commitment to championing the creative arts for job creation and economic development.
The Theme: Upcycling Meets High Fashion
This year KFW tackles one of the biggest conversations in the global creative space under the central theme of “Upcycling (Recycling)”.
But the real magic lies in the 2026 sub-theme: “Trash to Trend”.
This powerful concept challenges designers to push their creative boundaries, transforming waste and recycled materials into stunning runway pieces. It’s a beautifully raw intersection where sustainability meets luxury, proving that style doesn’t have to cost the earth.
Prepare to see local designers amplify their creative elements and take the fashion industry by storm.

Fashion with a Purpose: Empowering Local Talent
Khayelitsha Fashion Week has never been just about the glitz, glamour, or profits. At its core the “why” behind the show is about opening doors and creating a sustainable growth platform for emerging creatives.
This year’s curated development programs include:
- Model Development: Following rigorous auditions, 45 successful candidates are currently undergoing a structured two-months training program focusing on runway techniques, stage presence, and professional development.
- Designer Workshops: 15 selected designers are participating in intensive workshops aimed at sharpening their creative and technical skills, with a heavy emphasis on sustainable fashion practices.
- Industry Masterclasses: A series of masterclasses led by seasoned industry professionals will offer invaluable insights into upcycling, branding, marketing, and navigating modern industry trends.
Boosting the Township Economy
KFW is a massive advocate for local economic growth. By attracting fashion enthusiasts, media, and tourists from across Cape Town and beyond, the event creates a booming ripple effect for township businesses.
This includes ensuring inclusion of local vendors who benefit through direct on-site sales opportunities for catering, transport, hospitality and event logistics. Khayelitsha Fashion Week also directly contributes to creating both temporary and permanent employment for models, stylists, photographers, production crews, and administrative staff.
