HSBC SVNS PARTY COMES TO CAPE TOWN
World Rugby’s revamped Sevens Series arrives in the Mother City this December with fanfare.
DHL Stadium, situated at the foot of Table Mountain, hosts its seventh Cape Town Sevens tournament on 9 and 10 December.
Cape Town is among eight host cities for an exciting new series kicking off in Dubai on 2 December.
The rebranded SVNS festivals will feature 12 men’s and women’s teams chasing the ultimate prize, while also providing fans with a unique festival of sport, music, food and immersive experiences.
“The HSBC SVNS Cape Town experience just exploded to a whole new level,” says SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer.
“We have long thought about expanding and enhancing the spectator experience and the new HSBC SVNS delivers exactly that, making for an exciting new departure – we’re honoured to be chosen as one of the host cities.
“It will go from a rugby event to a festival experience, unlike anything else we’ve seen at rugby before. The proposed changes to the tournament format and the new plans for an even better fan experience will ensure everyone who attends in Cape Town in December, will be blown away. We certainly can’t wait for the action to start.”
BRINGING THE GEES
The Mother City is set to reignite its love affair with an event that has thrilled crowds and entertained since 2015.
Voted Best Live Experience in South Africa at the Sports Industry Awards on two occasions, the HSBC Cape Town Sevens has not only provided excitement on the field but brings a vibe in the stands which locals refer to as the gees (spirit or enthusiasm).
“Rugby Sevens and Cape Town have a wonderful decade-old relationship, with our city putting on a show every year that must surely rank among the highlights of the season,” says Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
“For us, the annual SVNS tournament is one of the most important events on our calendar as the world tunes in to Cape Town during a magical time of the year and sees our city at its very best. We are ready to put on our best SVNS party yet and our iconic DHL Stadium with its brand new pitch, is going to set a standard in this competition that will not easily be matched.”
In the last eight years, the Cape Town Sevens has earned a reputation as the biggest jol with crowds embracing the energetic atmosphere with dress ups, boisterous cheering on the stands and all-round fun.
The new SVNS festival promises an even better weekend of summertime vibes with unique experiences as rugby, music, food and wellbeing combined to attract a new generation of audiences.
There will also be a range of competitive and social sports for all at SVNS festivals, from non-contact rugby to functional fitness.
With an exciting line up of local entertainers including DJ Zinhle, Jack Parow, NV Funk, Los Jetsons, Mila Rose, Sun-El Musician, 3 Tons of Fun and many more, the DHL Stadium is definitely the place to be on 9 and 10 December.
