As winter wraps its cool embrace around Cape Town, the city heats up with an extraordinary line-up of events this July that promise to chase away the chill.

The Mother City is hosting several events catering to sports enthusiasts, performance arts lovers, and gamers.

July in Cape Town isn’t just about misty mornings and cocoa by the fire — it’s a month with electric energy, cultural celebrations, and sporting spectacle.

Here are the must-attend events lighting up Cape Town this July:

 

Canal Walk Presents: Aladdin

 

The magic of the Aladdin continues at Canal Walk’s Centre Court this month.

Having kicked off on 28 June, the production’s four-week run will have audiences enthralled with the enchanting story of Aladdin, an aspiring dreamer whose world is transformed upon discovering a magical lamp.

Featuring flying carpets, a larger-than-life Genie, and a love story that defies the odds, this production continues a 20-year tradition of bringing joy and wonder to Cape Town families.

With a stellar local cast including Anzio September as the titular character, Mekaila Mathys as the bold Princess Jasmin, and Onela Metuso as the Genie, Aladdin transforms Canal Walk’s Centre Court into a magical Arabian wonderland.

It’s the perfect place for the whole family to spend time these winter holidays.

Aladdin runs from Tuesday to Sunday with shows at 11:00, 12:30, and 14:00.

 

African Gaming Championship

 

Africa’s biggest esports stage lands in the Mother City from 10 – 13 July.

The African Gaming Championship brings together elite players, up-and-coming stars, and entire gaming communities for four thrilling days of live action.

Taking place at the Markethall in GrandWest, the championship will span a number of divisions, including schools, universities, and open categories.

The championship ensures broad accessibility while maintaining a competitive edge, allowing new talent to rise and veterans to prove their dominance.

Entry is free for spectators while participants can enter the competition for R100. Game. EAFC 25 and Brawlhalla.

 

 

Cape Town Festival of Running

 

In Cape Town, running is not only for summer days but an all-year-round lifestyle which continues with the Cape Town Festival of Running on 12 and 13 July.

In its 26 years, Cape Town Festival of Running offers its signature 50km ultra-marathon, a fast-paced 21.1km half-marathon, and a fun 5×5 km relay.

Taking place over two days, starting and finishing on the Sea Point Promenade, the race event offers scenic views of the Atlantic Seaboard and a fun day out for runners of all abilities.

Organised by HEWAT Athletics Club, this event promises community spirit, beautiful views, and the unbeatable thrill of race day.

The 21km is already sold out, but runners can still register for the 50km Ultra-Marathon (R330) or the 5×5 km Relay (R350 for Adults and R300 for Juniors).

Racing starts at 07:00 on both days.

 

HYROX Cape Town

 

Back by popular demand, HYROX Cape Town returns for its second edition, bringing the world’s fastest-growing indoor fitness race to the CTICC on 19 – 20 July.

This hybrid challenge features eight workout stations separated by 1km runs — all performed in a high-energy arena atmosphere.

Whether you’re going solo, teaming up with a friend in the Doubles division, or challenging colleagues in the relay format, HYROX is all about pushing limits and building community.

With divisions ranging from Open to Pro and even Adaptive categories, everyone is welcome to join the movement.

Participating in HYROX Cape Town costs R1,600, and R150 will get spectators front-row seats to all the fitness action.

Run4Freedom Langa

 

The running season continues in the Mother City on 20 July at the Langa Sports Stadium.

TymeBank Langa AC’s Run4Freedom series is a celebration of South Africa’s freedom, community, and movement.

The 10km and 6km race routes take runners on a historic journey through Langa, one of Cape Town’s oldest townships.

Runners and walkers are invited to come enjoy the freedom to run and walk the streets of Langa.

Entry fees range from R40 to R180.

The 10km road race sets off at 07:30 while the 6km run is scheduled for a 07:50 start.

 

Springbok Women vs Black Ferns XV

 

The Springbok Women continue preparations for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 with a clash against New Zealand at Athlone Stadium this month.

The fixture on 26 July will be the first of two warm-up matches against the Black Ferns. The second will also take place at Athlone Stadium on 2 August.

The two games against the defending champions New Zealand are the Women Boks’ final matches before the start of the global showpiece in England next month.

Tickets are selling for as little as R20 per person, so make sure to reserve your seat to be part of this celebration of rugby.

South African International Ballet Competition 

 

The South African International Ballet Competition takes centre stage at the Artscape Theatre for its 12th edition.

Recognised as Africa’s premier ballet competition, the event will together exceptional dancers from around the globe from from 28 – 31 July.

It will feature elite international jurors from countries including France, Germany, China, and South Korea.

This year’s programme builds on its legacy with regional outreach initiatives, the esteemed Ballet Recognition Awards, and a commitment to accessibility for local schools and communities.

The competition promises four days of dazzling technique, powerful storytelling, and cultural exchange.
