AUGUST EVENTS HIGHLIGHTS
Cape Town is gearing up for a packed August as major sporting events, cultural showcases and community celebrations take centre stage across the city.
From the Springbok Women’s final World Cup warm-up to the iconic Totalsports Women’s Race and a host of festivals and performances, the month promises something for every Capetonian.
Here’s a look at what’s on the calendar for a month setting the tone for what will be an exciting second half of 2025.
Springbok Women build up for the Rugby World Cup
The Springbok Women lock in for their final Women’s Rugby World Cup warm up game against the Black Ferns XV at Athlone Stadium.
The team put up a valiant effort against the reigning Rugby World Cup champions at the same venue the previously week.
The second encounter on 2 August is another opportunity for the Bok Women to test themselves before the final squad announcement for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England later this month.

Thousands expected for Totalsports Women’s Race on Women’s Day
More than 12,000 women are set to participate in the Totalsports Women’s Race on 9 August, turning the streets of Cape Town into a “Sea of Pink” to mark National Women’s Day.
Starting from Darling Street, the route winds through some of the city’s most iconic heritage sites, ending at the Grand Parade. The event is both a celebration of womanhood and an energetic display of community and camaraderie.

Youth Talent on display at Growthpoint SA Squash Nationals
From 14 to 16 August, South Africa’s top junior squash players will converge at the V&A Waterfront for the U17 and U19 editions of the Growthpoint SA Nationals.
The three-day event will see emerging talents from across the country compete for national titles, with free access to the public.

Whisky fans gear up for The Only Whisky Show
Taking place on 14 and 15 August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), The Only Whisky Show will feature over 150 premium whiskies available for tasting.
Presented by WhiskyBrother, the event welcomes both seasoned connoisseurs and newcomers for an immersive whisky-tasting experience.

International Dance Spectacle Lord of the Dance Returns
The globally renowned Lord of the Dance production returns to Cape Town from 15 to 17 August as part of its “A Lifetime of Standing Ovations” tour.
Directed by Michael Flatley and featuring a cast of 40 dancers, the updated show will be staged at GrandWest’s Grand Arena, combining classic choreography with modern stage technology.

Silwerskermfees showcases SA film and television in Camps Bay
The kykNET Silwerskermfees returns to Camps Bay from 20 to 23 August, spotlighting South African stories in Afrikaans across film, television, and digital platforms.
The festival programme includes feature film premieres, short films by emerging voices, and industry-focused workshops, hosted across The Bay Hotel and Theatre on the Bay.

Springboks set for Cape Town clash Against Wallabies
The Springboks return to DHL Stadium on 23 August to face Australia in Round 2 of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship.
The highly anticipated match marks the Wallabies’ first appearance in Cape Town in more than a decade. It will be Australia’s first ever at DHL Stadium — in what is expected to be a high-intensity Test match.

Lipton Challenge Cup returns for historic 71st Edition
From 26 to 30 August, the Lipton Challenge Cup will bring together more than 20 sailing clubs for South Africa’s premier regatta.
Hosted by the Royal Cape Yacht Club, the 2025 edition introduces the J22 class.
This move is aimed at making the competition more accessible and inclusive for youth, school yacht clubs, and sailing academies.

Broadway Classic Chicago opens extended run at Artscape
Broadway’s longest-running American musical, Chicago, opens at Artscape on 27 August and runs until 28 September.
With iconic numbers like “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango,” the production promises to deliver a signature mix of glitz, scandal, and award-winning choreography.

Second Round of Squash Nationals
The Growthpoint SA Squash Nationals resumes from 28 to 30 August with senior and U15 age group competitions.
This leg will feature the country’s top senior players and promising young athletes competing at the highest level.

Western Province and Pumas in Currie Cup showdown
DHL Western Province will take on the Airlink Pumas in a vital Currie Cup clash on 30 August.
The match, part of Round 6, could be pivotal in WP’s bid for a top four finish. It would be the team’s shot at a first title in eight years.
Kick-off is scheduled for 19:20.

Blisters for Bread Walk to tackle school hunger
The month concludes with Blisters for Bread, a family-friendly fundraising walk taking place on 31 August.
The walk takes walkers along a famous stretch of the Atlantic Seaboard that includes the Sea Point Promenade and the Mouille Point Lighthouse.
Organised by the Peninsula School Feeding Association, the event helps provide meals to underprivileged schoolchildren. Participants can choose between a 5km or 10km walk, with entertainment and giveaways on offer.
