GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL IN CAPE TOWN GETS THE SPOTLIGHT THIS OCTOBER


Cape Town is kicking off a festival of grassroots football this month, with the beautiful game taking centre stage across local pitches.

This month, the City of Cape Town is partnering with five tournaments that will see more than 5 000 players lace up their boots over the next three weeks.

From cubs chasing their first touches to seasoned amateurs eyeing silverware, the tournaments are inclusive of all ages from under-6 all the way to senior level –

Rygate Cubs Festival – nurturing future stars

The first whistle blows at the Rygate Cubs Festival, kicking off on Monday, 6 October at Johnston Road Sports Complex in Athlone.

This youth showcase, now in its 14th edition, will see 2 800 players across the U6, U8, U10 and U12 girls’ divisions.

A total of 257 teams from 98 clubs will take part in six-a-side fixtures running until 11 October.

Organised by the Rygate Football Association, the festival has long been a proving ground for Cape Town’s youngest players.

Matches will run in the evenings during the week (15:30 till late) with full-day action on the final Saturday. Tickets are available at the gate for just R10.

Kapstadt Cup – from local roots to global reach

Just two days later, the spotlight shifts to the Kapstadt Cup, one of Cape Town’s most prestigious grassroots tournaments.

From Wednesday, 8 October, over 2 500 players will take part in a four-day football spectacle across multiple venues.

Since its first edition in 2010, the Kapstadt Cup has grown into an internationally recognised event.

This year’s line-up includes 134 teams from 33 clubs, spanning nine age groups from U7 to U23, with 346 matches scheduled at Green Point Shared Fields, Hartleyvale Stadium, Wynberg Military Base and Athlone Stadium.

Big-name outfits including Cape Town Spurs, Stellenbosch FC, Mamelodi Sundowns FC, University of Pretoria, and Bloemfontein City will be joined by regional and international clubs such as Windhoek Sport Club (Namibia), Julinho Athletic Academy (Namibia), and Action International Academy (KZN).

The tournament runs until Sunday, 12 October, with fixtures and tickets (from R15 for juniors) available online.

Finals – the big showpiece

On Saturday, 18 October, all eyes turn to Athlone Stadium for the SAFA Cape Town Coke Cup Finals, the grand finale of the country’s biggest amateur knockout football tournament.

After six months of drama and over 1 000 clubs battling through the preliminary rounds, it comes down to the last two in each division – U18 Boys, Senior Ladies and Men.

Equal prize money will be awarded across the men’s and women’s finals, underlining the tournament’s commitment to inclusivity.

The Coke Cup, now in its 30th year, has become a launchpad for countless players. Gates open at 12:30 with the first kick-off at 13:00. Tickets, priced from R30, will be available via Quicket from 7 October.

Junior Fiesta Tournament – developing the next generation 

Clyde Pinelands FC’s ninth Junior Fiesta Tournament will take place on 25 and 26 October at the Clyde Pinelands Sports Ground.

The tournament, catering for U7, U9, U11 and U12 football clubs, will see more than 60 teams compete over the weekend.

It regularly attracts teams from surrounding areas including Langa, Hazendal, Athlone, Bonteheuwel and Lavender Hill.
