SPRINGBOKS TO PLAY AUSTRALIA IN CAPE TOWN
The Springboks are set for a return to Cape Town in 2025 for a clash with Australia.
The reigning Rugby World Cup champions will play the Wallabies at DHL Stadium in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship.
The second round encounter will take place on 23 August 2025, almost a year after the Springboks’ last match in the Mother City.
“We are delighted that SARU has allocated the Springboks vs Wallabies Rugby Test to the DHL Stadium,” says DHL Stadium CEO Gina Woodburn.
“It is always an exciting prospect to host our national rugby team. With a capacity of 58 000, we anticipate the match will be a sell-out and look forward to welcoming these great teams to our stadium and Cape Town.”
The Cape Town match forms part of a six-test home stretch that will see the Springboks play in some of the country’s major cities.
“We have played at most of these venues in the last few years and we know them well, although it will be particularly exciting to return to Gqeberha for the first time since 2021.
“We thoroughly enjoy the passionate support we receive from our home crowds throughout the country, and we have no doubt we will enjoy great support at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium once again – this time in a packed stadium, which we last experienced in the Eastern Cape in 2018 against Australia,” says Bok coach Rassie Erasmus.
Erasmus’ team won its first Rugby Championship in five years in 2024, going on an incredible run in which they only lost once during the tournament.
The championship triumph included 18 – 12 win over New Zealand at a sold-out DHL Stadium last September.
Around 52 000 people packed the iconic venue for the clash against longtime rivals and clinched the Rugby Championship.
TOP-CLASS VENUES
The match will be Australia’s first game in Cape Town in 11 years and the first at the DHL Stadium.
The Springboks ran out 28-10 winners in that match victorious played at Newlands Stadium in 2014.
DHL Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for the Springboks, winning four of the five matches played at the iconic venues.
“All six home Tests will be played at top-class venues, and we are pleased that we will see the Boks run out in five different provinces,” says SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer.
“The team enjoys a lot of support throughout the country – we had more than 300,000 fans in attendance at our home Tests last year – and by spreading out the matches, hopefully it allows as many people as possible to see them live in action.”
Details on ticket sales will be announced in due course.
